Because of its geographic position, located on the plateau of
Isola Capo Rizzuto at a height of about 150mt above the sea
level, right in the middle of the promontory that separates the
Gulf of Taranto from the Gulf of Squillace, S. Anna S.p.A. Airport
covers a natural user basin including the whole province of
Crotone, the Jonian part of the province of Cosenza, a great
part of the plateau of the Sila and those towns lying to the
north of the Calabrian chieftown Catanzaro. This area counts
an amount of about 450.000 residents, which is about the
25% of the whole calabrian population.
For its peripheral status, Calabria could be considered the
third island of Italy, moreover because of its hard orographic
features that make the connection between the Jonian and the
Tirrenian side difficult, the strengthening of the airports as
a major instrument for social and economic development is
necessary.
Among all the developing economic activities tourism plays
a major part. In the surroundings of the airport stand
important tourist and hotel facilities, most of which rise in the
area stretching from the archaeological area of Capo Colonna
and the promontory of Capo Rizzuto, bounding the Marine
reserve (one of the main Mediterranean marine areas).
